Gardner claims victory after tied Cochran city council election

Following a tie, the City of Cochran held a runoff Tuesday to decide which candidate would win the District 1, Post 1 seat on the city council. 

Trecia Gardner was elected with 60 votes, and her opponent, Teresa Mack, received 48. During the first election held March 18, each candidate received 44 votes. 

Voter turnout was higher for the runoff with a turnout of 14% compared to the initial election, which had a turnout of 11%. There are 802 registered voters in Cochran District 1, the city said. 

“I am grateful to God for the opportunity to serve His people and fulfill His purpose,” Gardner told the Times Journal Post on Tuesday night. “I am dedicated to serving. I also acknowledge my opponent’s passion for engaging in a fair and respectful campaign. To my family, friends, and the entire District 1 community, thank you for your ongoing support. I anticipate greater attendance and participation in our monthly meetings, leading to collaborative efforts to enhance Cochran.”

Mack offered a brief concession via Facebook: “Thanks for all your support District 1. The numbers weren’t in my favor, but I’m still shown favor by Him. Help me congratulate Trecia Garner, our newly elected district 1 council member.”

The winner of District 3, Dianne Lester, was sworn in at the April 8 city council meeting.
